Sooner or later, every brand asks us the same thing. "Why can't we use that song? Everyone else is." It's a good question, and the answer saves a lot of muted reels and awkward takedowns.
This guide covers how Instagram music for business accounts actually works, why the song you want is often missing, and what we do instead to make brand reels sound as good as anything on the feed.
Why the song you want isn't there
If your Instagram profile is set up as a business account, the music library you see is smaller than the one a personal account or a creator account sees. That's not a glitch. It's licensing.
Record labels license popular songs to Instagram for personal, non-commercial use. A brand promoting itself is commercial use, so most chart music isn't cleared for it. Business accounts get a library of tracks that are cleared for business use instead. It's smaller, and it rarely has the song of the week.
Meta's own music guidelines say this plainly: using music in videos that are mainly commercial or promotional is restricted. You can read the details in Meta's Business Help Centre.
"Can't we just switch to a creator account?"
Plenty of brands try this. A creator account usually shows more songs. But the account type doesn't change what the reel is for. If the reel promotes a business, it's still commercial use, and the restrictions on commercial use still apply.
There's also a practical cost. Switching account types can change which insights and tools you get, and it doesn't protect a reel that runs as an ad. We don't recommend it as a workaround for brand content.
What happens if you use unlicensed music anyway
Sometimes nothing happens. That's the trap. When something does happen, it's usually one of these:
- The audio gets muted. The reel stays up, silent, often after it has already started gaining traction.
- The reel is blocked in some countries. Reach quietly drops and you may not notice why.
- The reel can't be boosted or used as an ad. You find out the day you try to put money behind your best-performing post.
- The content is removed. Repeated issues can affect the account itself.
None of these are worth it for a brand that's planning to be around in a year.
A lesson from our own website
Music licensing has caught us out too, in a small way. One of our reels for NikahOne uses a song from Instagram's music library. It sounds great on Instagram, because the licence covers Instagram.
When we built our own website and put our best work on it, that reel had to play silent. The licence covers the platform, not wherever we'd like to show the video. So on our site, that card sends people to Instagram to hear it with sound.
Music licensed inside Instagram stays inside Instagram. Plan for every place the video will live before you choose the track.
If you plan to reuse a reel on your website, in an ad, on YouTube or at an event, choose music you're licensed to use everywhere.
Safe Instagram music for business accounts, and beyond
The good news: the best-performing brand reels rarely depend on a trending song. Here's what we use instead.
1. Original audio
Your own sound: a voiceover, a conversation, the sizzle of a pan, the noise of a busy shop. Original audio is yours to use anywhere, and other people can use it in their reels, which spreads your content further. Many of our strongest reels lean on dialogue and real sound, not music.
2. The business-cleared library
Instagram's library for business accounts is better than people assume. Search by mood rather than by song name. "Warm acoustic," "upbeat percussion" or "cinematic ambient" finds usable tracks faster than hunting for a hit.
3. Meta Sound Collection
Meta runs a free library of music and sound effects that's cleared for use in content on its platforms. It's a solid source for background beds. Have a look at the Meta Sound Collection.
4. A licensed stock music subscription
For brand films, ads and anything that will live off Instagram, we use music from libraries that sell commercial licences. Read the licence terms before you buy: check that it covers social media, paid ads and websites.
5. Commissioned music
For a signature campaign, a short original piece or a sound logo can become part of the brand. It's the most expensive option and the one that's entirely yours.
Getting the sound right, whatever track you use
Music is only part of how a reel sounds. A few habits make a big difference:
- Mix music under speech, not over it. If someone is talking, the music should sit well below the voice.
- Cut to the beat. Placing cuts on the rhythm makes even a simple track feel designed for the reel.
- Use sound effects. A pour, a click, a door. Small sounds make footage feel real.
- Don't let music carry a weak reel. If the reel only works with a famous song, the idea needs work.
Our reel editing tips cover the mixing side in more detail.
Does trending audio help reach?
Trending audio can help a reel get discovered, because people browse sounds and see other reels using them. But for brands, the gain is usually small next to the risk. A strong hook, a reel people want to send to friends and a clear idea will do more for reach than any song. We explain what actually drives reach in the Instagram metrics that matter.
If you do want to ride a trend, look for one built on original audio, like a voice clip or a sound effect, rather than a commercial song.
A quick checklist before you post
- Is this reel promoting the business? Then treat it as commercial.
- Is the track from the business-cleared library, Meta Sound Collection, a licence you've paid for, or your own audio?
- Will this video be used anywhere besides Instagram? Check the licence covers it.
- Will you want to run it as an ad later? Choose music that allows it now.
- Is the voice clearly audible over the music?
The bottom line
Instagram music for business accounts is limited on purpose, and the limits protect you more than they hurt you. Use original sound, cleared libraries and licensed tracks, and your reels will never go quiet at the worst possible moment.
Music, sound design and licensing are part of every edit we deliver. If you'd like reels that sound right and stay up, let's talk.
